Today at Microsoft Ignite 2024 SQL Server 2025 was announced. Given it’s name and previous release cycles, we can expect SQL Server 2025 to be publicly released and go GA (Generally Available) I would guess sometime in the last 1/4 of 2025. I do not know these times so do not take this as to exactly when it will be released. These products go through cycles to allow for feedback and getting the product ready to ship.
The product team has been working really hard to keep pace with AI technologies that are just exploding in the market today. With this announcement of SQL Server 2025 being in Private Preview not all features that will be in the final product are know or have been publicly released. The features that were announced today may even change or morph in what they end up being when the final product goes GA.
Some of the features announced as part of the new product are:
- Call AI Services directly from T-SQL using sp_invoke_external_rest_endpoint
- Native Vector Data types and Indexing with DiskANN. You can read more here.
- SQL Database in Microsoft Fabric
- Open Mirroring in Microsoft Fabric
- Support for Azure Antra-managed identities
- Improved performance with enhanced query optimization and query performance execution.
While these are only highlighted points, there is a lot to dig into over the next 12 months during the various stages of announcements and access to the product. Stay tuned for further updates on SQL Server 2025 and what this means for you once it is released.
